  1. World War II (1939-1945) was a War between 
  2. Germany, Italy, and Japan (the Axis powers) 
  3. on one side, and Britain, the Commonwealth, 
  4. France, the USA, the USSR, and China (the 
  5. Allied powers) on the other. An estimated 55 
  6. million lives were lost, 20 million of them 
  7. citizens of the USSR. The war was fought in 
  8. the Atlantic and Pacific theatres.
